Dropped them into the container held by the security guard, walked through the metal detector, grabbed my things, and headed to check-in. I was greeted with, “What’s your date of birth again, hon?” After a few minutes in the ER waiting room, the triage nurse came out and called my name. As I walked into her small room, she looked at me and said, “I’m sorry you’re back.” She took my vitals, asked a few questions, and sent me back out. A few minutes later, another nurse came to get me. “Nice to see you again,” she said with a soft, knowing smile. I lay in the ER bed, and when the doctor came in, it was the same look, the same tone. “I’m sorry you’re back.” A few minutes later, I was rolled into the CT room. No instructions needed. I climbed onto the table, pulled the blanket over myself, handed them my arm so they could hook up the contrast, raised my arms above my head, closed my eyes, and waited. Like I had done it a hundred times before. I was rolled back into the ER and later admitted to the fifth floor, a floor I know too well. When the elevator doors opened, the nurse paused, trying to remember where room 530 was. “Left,” I said, without thinking. Like I had been there before. As I was pushed down the hallway, I lifted my head slightly and waved to the nurses, nurses who at one point felt like roommates, and now I was just visiting. This trip was quick, about 24 hours. At the end, they handed me my discharge papers. No instructions needed. I took a left out of my room, a few steps, then a right to the elevators. Down to the lobby, then outside. I took a deep breath of fresh air, walked to my van, and drove to work.
